White Cedar Log Dining- Stlye & Comfort

Thuja occidentalis doesn’t sound like something you’d want in your bedroom. But today, it’s finding its way into American homes in record numbers.

No, we’re not talking about some rare disease. Thuja occidentalis is the scientific name for Northern White Cedar, one of the most popular choices in rustic cedar log beds today.

The natural look of log furniture is one of the reasons why it is gaining in popularity, not only for mountain retreats and vacation home, but primary residences. The rustic look melds nicely with today’s contemporary homes, adding just a touch of country flair to the master suite, guest room or kid’s room. Small wonder why cedar log beds end up being passed down from one generation to the next still looking as new as the day they were purchased.

Considered part of the cypress family of trees, Northern White Cedar has a pleasant mild fragrance and warm colored wood that lends itself nicely for use as a cedar bed. It is native to the Northeastern United States and the Appalachian Mountains. Because it grows fairly quickly, it is a very renewable resource, especially compared with traditional hardwoods used in bedroom furnishings.

In most cases, the bark is peeled away from the trunk, either by hand or machine. This exposes the rich knotting and grain of the wood. Thanks to Mother Nature’s grand design, no two pieces look exactly the same. The wood is usually treated with a polyurethane finish to protect the look of the wood.

One of the great things about Northern White Cedar is its relative lightness. Even though the finished pieces look and are substantial, they can be easily moved in the room when you’re in the mood to rearrange or redecorate.

Whether you’re looking for a cedar log bed, cedar arched log bed, rustic natural cedar log bed or even bunk beds, you’ll find there is an abundance of choices available to fit any décor in your home. Most cedar log beds are available in styles ranging from the ever popular Appalachian and Adirondack to rustic log and natural finishes.
